Northampton Charter Panels in Guildhall

03 December

This stunning tapestry has been created over the last two years to commemorate the 825th anniversary of Richard I awarding Northampton its charter and has now been placed in its permanent home in the Guildhall in  Northampton. The tapestry has a central panel showing the charter being awarded and eight surrounding panels representing the centuries since its grant. There are also two panels showing the castle as it may have been at the time and agriculture surrounding the town.

250 different shades of Appletons wool were used in its creation; it was designed by Chris Fiddes of Northampton, and Gill Lindsay stitched the central panel and led a team of 35 stitchers in completing the piece.  The entire project took nearly 2 years and is well worth a viewing!

Visitors should contact the Guildhall, Northampton on 01604 838400 or email at guildhalloffice@northampton.gov.uk to arrange a viewing.
