Philippa Turnbull and her daughter Laura run The Crewel Work Company, specialists in historic British needlework. The Crewel Work Company has been producing elegant embroidery kits for over 25 years. Philippa’s designs are based on the original needlework she finds in British castles and country houses. This enthusiastic mother and daughter team aim to make the world of needlework accessible to all with their range of stunning kits and hugely popular needlework Retreats.
The Glasgow Bedspread is a special edition kit that originates from a 1914 design and comes from Philippa’s own private embroidery collection. As the name indicates, the bedspread was originally embroidered in Glasgow, Scotland. The bedspread features lively floral motifs on a repeated vine motif. The colour of the wool, the linen, the stitches and the scale all remain true to the original from 1914. The creator, known only by the initials “E.M” skilfully combined soft deep pewter greys with vibrant accents of bright colour, producing one of only a handful of bedspreads which still exist today.
There are 4 different package options to choose from. The full design measures 75 x 55 inches and is provided mapped out over 26 A3 Stitch Charts. The kit is beautifully packaged and contains detailed instructions along with all the necessary Appleton’s wools and special crewel needles for double and single thread, plus a copy of The Essential Guide for Newcomers to Crewel Work.
